Sunday, December 13, 2020 • 6 PM

In this FREE live-streamed performance, our ensemble of local professional instrumentalists teams up with renowned soprano and Baroque specialist, Nola Richardson, for one special evening. Many may remember Nola as the soprano soloist in some of our previous performances of Handel’s “Messiah.” This December, we’re excited feature her once again on Alessandro Scarlatti’s beautiful Christmas Cantata, “O di Betlemme altera povertà” and Handel’s festive, “Gloria,” HWV deest!

Composed in 1695, Scarlatti’s Christmas Cantata, O di Betlemme altera povertà, was likely commissioned by an Italian noble and first performed at the Vatican Christmas Eve service. The delightful seven-movement work is scored for soprano, strings, and continuo. It is a charming example of Scarlatti’s mastery of melodic vocal lines and ability to musically depict a sublime pastorale scene.

Handel’s Gloria, HWV deest (the Latin word for ‘missing’) was only recently discovered and attributed to him in 2001. The work is divided into six movements and is a thrilling and vocally demanding work for soprano soloist, strings, and continuo. Handel likely composed this piece around 1706, as it resembles his other earlier compositions during his time in Italy.
