Dark and introspective, Sie werden euch in den Bann tun (“They will put you under banishment”), BWV 44 premiered on May 21, 1724 as part of Bach’s first cantata cycle. Similar to the work of Baroque contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, Bach made the unusual choice to break the liturgical text into two movements. Typically, Bach opened his cantatas with a chorus. However, in this instance an alto-tenor duet leads into a continuation of the text with a full chorus. Finally, the lamentation of the early movements transforms into jubilation with the soprano aria “Es ist und bleibt der Christen Trost” and final chorale “So sei nun, Seele, deine.”
Colorado Bach Ensemble’s “Cantata Insights Series” gives audiences an opportunity to learn more about Bach’s many cantatas. In these popular and educational concerts, Artistic Director James Kim has a special way of explaining what he knows, drawing you into the wonders of Bach’s music. After James gives his insights on a “guided tour” through the cantata, the ensemble performs the work in its entirety, giving the audience a fresh perspective of one of Bach’s magnificent works.
