Cantata 5, Wo soll ich fliehen hin (Where Shall I Flee) is a chorale cantata based on a hymn of the same name by Johann Heermann (1585–1647), a German poet and hymn writer. The work is scored for four vocal soloists, choir, trumpet, two oboes, strings, and continuo. It is worth noting that the third movement, a delightful tenor aria, is accompanied by solo viola. This is one of the few times Bach ever uses a viola as the obbligato instrument in any of his works. After a recitative, the bass sings a stirring aria accompanied by a virtuosic trumpet. As expected, the work closes with a straightforward chorale setting. soprano line. Another highlight is the third movement, a beautiful alto aria accompanied by solo violin.

Colorado Bach Ensemble’s “Cantata Insights Series” gives audiences an opportunity to learn more about Bach’s many cantatas. In these popular and educational concerts, Artistic Director James Kim has a special way of explaining what he knows, drawing you into the wonders of Bach’s music.
